Gully Trap
Gully trap is a plumbing fitting that is installed outside a building, it serves the purpose of preventing foul odors, gases, rodents, and vermin from entering buildings through the drainage system.
Generally, gully traps are installed outside a building at the lowest point of the sewer line or where wastewater from the kitchen, and bathroom is collected before it enters the main sewage system.
Gully Trap Types
Following are the two types of gully traps used in home sewage disposal:
- P-Trap Gully
- Bottle Gully
P – Trap Gully
The shape of this gully trap resembles with letter P hence it is called P – Trap Gully. This gully trap has two ends one end with an opening connects with the hopper, while the other end of the gully turns upwards and then back down to connect with the underground drain system.
A “P” shape curve in this gully trap creates a barrier for odors and toxins, preventing them from escaping.
Bottle Gully
The design resembles with bottle shape hence it is named Bottle Gully. This serves the same purpose as of P trap Gully, here bottle gully uses an internal sleeve to push wastewater into an outlet pipe leading to the sewerage system.
Some water is left in the gully to prevent the entry of foul odors and toxic gases into the house.
Gully Trap Uses
Gully traps are widely used in the drainage system as they keep surroundings hygienic and odor-free. The following are the gully trap uses:
- Prevents foul odors and gases from entering buildings through the drainage system.
- Collects wastewater and prevents solids from entering the main sewage system.
- Provides access for cleaning and maintenance of the drainage system.
- Prevents rodents and sewer animals coming into buildings.
Gully Trap Size
Gully trap size varies based on requirements but recommended that keep depth of a gully trap must be a minimum of 30 cm, while the water seal must be a minimum of 50 mm. Cast iron grating(Size 15cm x 15cm) is a part of a gully trap which is enclosed in cement and a brick masonry chamber.
At last, the main gully trap chamber should be plastered with air and water-tight cover. The inside dimensions of the gully trap chamber should be 30 cm x 30 cm
Gully Trap Chamber
A gully trap chamber refers to the enclosure or compartment that houses the gully trap. It is usually constructed of concrete, brickwork, or plastic and is designed to provide access to the gully trap for inspection, cleaning, and maintenance purposes.
The chamber is typically located below ground level and may have a removable cover for easy access. It also serves as a collection point for wastewater before it flows into the main sewage system.
